STEELSORPTION - COSHH DATA SHEET

Health and Safety Data Sheet.

Steelsorption acoustic panels are made of two component parts. One is the perforated steel facing sheet and the second is the acoustic mineral wool insulation.

(A ) Glass mineral wool for  acoustic insulation.

1. Composition

Inert vitreous silicate mineral wool bonded with a thermosetting phenolic resin

2. Hazards Identification

May cause temporary skin irritation by mechanical action. Cutting and handling may create dust. High levels of dust may irritate throat or eyes.

3. First Aid Measures

• Eye Contact - If irritation occurs wash eyes with clean water

• Skin Contact - If irritation occurs, wash skin with soap and water

• Inhalation - Move person to fresh air

• Ingestion - Drink plenty of water if accidentally swallowed. If any adverse reaction or discomfort continues from any of the above, seek medical advice.

4. Fire fighting measures

The products do not pose a fire hazard. However, some packaging materials and facings may burn.

Suitable Extinguishing Media - water, foam, carbon dioxide or dry powder.

Products of Combustion - carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and some trace gases.

5. Accidental Release Measures

Large pieces may be placed in plastic bags or waste bins. Granules or dust should be collected using vacuum cleaning or by damping down with water spray prior to sweeping up.

6. Handling and Storage

• Avoid unnecessary handling of unwrapped product.

• Store in original packaging in a dry place.

• If cutting material use sharp hand tools and avoid power tools.

• Ensure adequate ventilation of workspaces.

• Keep work areas clean. Use water sprays to dampen area prior to sweeping, or use vacuum cleaning.

7. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Occupational Exposure Limits

MEL - 5mg/m3 8-hour TWA (gravimetric) and 2 fibres/ml MEL 8-hour TWA (gravimetric).

In normal applications, it is unlikely that these MELs will be exceeded. Refer to current editions of HSE EH40- Occupational Exposure Limits.

Personal Protection

Respiratory - In confined spaces or if the MELs are likely to be exceeded, disposable facemasks complying with

EN 149 Class FFP1 or FFP2 should be used and are suitable for most applications to improve protection.

Skin - Gloves may be worn for comfort. Wear loose fitting clothing, avoiding constrictions around neck and wrists.

Eye - If working with products above head height or in restricted space, eye protection should be worn to comply with BS EN 166.

8. Physical and Chemical Properties

Appearance

Vitreous bonded mineral wool supplied in roll, slab or sectional form, with or without facings.

Melting Point Above 600°C

Solubility - Insoluble in water and generally chemically inert.

9. Stability and Reactivity

No special physical conditions need to be avoided or restrictions regarding incompatible materials.

ISOVER Insulation Products - Rolls, Slabs, Sections & Blowing Wool

10. Toxicological Information

Not classified as a carcinogen under the European Commission Directive 97/69/EC. No link between exposure to mineral wool fibres and lung disease in production or user industries. IARC Group 3 (Not classifiable).

11. Ecological Information

Stable product with no known adverse environmental effects.

12. Disposal Considerations

No special precautions. Not classified as hazardous or special waste in the UK and may be disposed of in

normal waste landfill.

13. Transport Information

Not classified as hazardous for transport.

14. Regulatory Information

Skin irritant (R38) according to directives 67/548/EEC and 97/69/EC. Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves. COSHH Regulations Schedule 1 MEL of 5mg/ m3 dust, 8-hour TWA (gravimetric) applies to all mineral wool dust.

15. Other Information

Eurisol Health Statement - PO Box 35084, London NW1 4XE.

HSE Guidance Note EH46 - Man-made mineral fibres.

HSE Guidance Note EH40 - Occupational Exposure Limits.

Recommended uses. Thermal and Acoustic insulation.

Note to User

This Safety Data Sheet does not constitute the users own workplace risk assessment, which is required

under COSHH (The control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations.

(B ) Perforated acoustic steel facing sheet.

1.This data is supplied by the manufacturers of the base steel sheet who are Arcelor.

2.Compliance with the directive 2002/95/EC.: The article 4.1 of the Directive 2002/95/EC of the European parliament of the council of 27 January 2003 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances such as lead , mercury , cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls ( PBB)  or polybrominated diphenyl ethers ( PBDE).

3.The annexe of the directive includes an exemption for lead “as an alloying element in steel containing up to 0.35% lead by weight , aluminium containing up to 0.4% lead by weight and as a copper alloy containing up to 4 % lead by weight”. Flat carbon steels and their coatings contain neither PBB nor PBDE.   Arcelor FCS Commercial  product offer will be total conformity with the directive , the 1st January 2006 at last.

4.In spite of the exemption included in the directive, Arcelor Flat Carbon Steel uses no lead as an intentionally introduced substance in its steel making plants. Natural traces of lead in steel are lower then 0.005%. For metallic coating expect Hot Dip Galvanised with spangles, Arcelor Flat Carbon steel uses metal supplies without intentionally introduced lead. Natural traces of lead in these coatings are lower then 0.005%.

5.In Hot Dip Galvanised with spangles, intentionally introduced lead content may reach 0.2% in the metallic coating. Arcelor Flat Carbon Steel intends to remove intentionally introduced lead from all its Hot Dip Galvanised production before the end of 2004.

6.Flat carbon hot rolled and cold rolled steel from Arcelor FCS Commercial steelmaking plants do comply with the Commission Directive 2002/95/EC amended by the Commission Decision 2005/615/EC.
